Pocket Hamster · Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

If you adore hamsters, I've got just the pattern for you! This quick, easy, and free Pocket Hamster pattern is so cute and comes with a printable adoption certificate as well.

LINKS

The Pocket Hamster is a fast and beginner-friendly amigurumi pattern. It features a dual-colored hamster with chubby cheeks and a belly. This stuffed animal plush makes a great yarn pet. This project is perfect to include as stock for craft fairs and markets. You can also make it as last-minute birthday gifts, party favors, and Christmas stocking stuffers.

Adoption Certificate

Want to complete this little gift with a hamster-themed adoption certificate? Simply sign up for my mailing list to download your copy of the free printable, and print it on cardstock paper! It makes a fun and interactive party favor for guests!

Recommended Yarn

This adorable amigurumi is designed with Posh Twist yarn, which is a super plush and soft bulky weight 5 yarn. It works up fast and produces generously-sized amigurumis with fewer stitches compared to thinner yarns!

While this pattern is designed with plush yarn for that plush, squishy look, it also works great with cotton or acrylic yarns if that’s what you have on hand. Your hamster will just end up smaller, but they'll be the perfect size for a mini keychain, hanging ornament, or bag charm! Simply add clasps and rings with this inexpensive keychain making kit and you can clip your amigurumi onto backpacks, purses, and more.

PDF Pattern

The PDF pattern is printable, ad-free, easy to read, contains helpful photo references, and helps support Sweet Softies! (If you enjoy my free patterns, you can consider it as a donation to me when you buy one of my pattern PDFs! It allows me to maintain my blog and continue sharing more free patterns.)

You can get the PDF pattern from my storeRavelry, or EtsyIt also includes a printable Adoption Certificate!

Crochet Instructions

HEAD

Begin with brown yarn.

R1: Ch 2. Insert 8 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (8)

R2: Inc around. (16)

R3: (Sc, inc) x 8. (24)

R4-R5: Sc around. (24)

R6: (Sc 3, inc) x 6. (30)

Switch to cream yarn.

R7: (Sc 4, inc) x 6. (36)

R8: Sc around. (36)

R9: Dec around. (18)

Let's now pause to shape the face. (Note: my face-shaping video tutorial is available here: https://youtu.be/jyf37PpZTGQ) Use a long strand of brown yarn and a yarn needle to make a stitch between R6-R7, count 8 sts to the side, and make another st. Pull the starting and ending yarn tails into the head tightly to create indents in the face, where the two stitches are made. Tie the yarn ends tightly together to keep the indents.

Insert 12mm eyes over the stitches made between R6-R7, 8 sts apart.

Using pink yarn and a yarn needle, embroider a nose over 2 sts between R7-R8.

R10: Dec around. (9)

Without FO, continue with the Body section.

BODY

Switch between brown and cream yarn, starting with brown yarn for the backside.

R1: Mark 4 sts at the front of the body with a yarn scrap (keeping in mind where the eyes are located). Inc around in FLO in this round, using cream yarn for the 4 inc in the front, and brown yarn for the 5 inc in the back. (18)

R2: In the 8 cream sts from R1, sc 8 in cream yarn. In the 10 brown sts from R1, do the following in brown yarn: inc, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc. (22)

R3: In the 8 cream sts from R2, sc 8 in cream yarn. In the 14 brown sts from R2, do the following in brown yarn: inc, sc 12, inc. (24)

R4: In the 8 cream sts from R3, sc 8 in cream yarn. In the 16 brown sts from R3, do the following in brown yarn: inc, sc 14, inc. (26)

R5: In the 8 cream sts from R4, sc 8 in cream yarn. In the 18 brown sts from R4, do the following in brown yarn: sc 18. (26)

R6: In the 8 cream sts from R5, do the following in cream yarn: dec, sc 4, dec. In the 18 brown sts from R5, do the following in brown yarn: sc 18. (24)

R7: In the 6 cream sts from R6, do the following in cream yarn: dec 3. In the 18 brown sts from R6, do the following in brown yarn: dec 9. (12)

R8: Using brown yarn only, dec 4. Leave the remaining sts unworked.

FO with a long tail for sewing the opening closed. Stuff the body well.

ARMS (x2)

Use brown yarn.

R1: Ch 2. Insert 6 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (6)

R2-R4: Sc around. (6)

FO with a long tail for sewing to the body. No need to stuff the arms. Sew arms to the sides of the neck, over the brown stitches between the Head’s R10 and the Body’s R1.

LEGS (x2)

Use brown yarn.

R1: Ch 2. Insert 6 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. (6)

R2-R3: Sc around. (6)

FO with a long tail for sewing. For a seated position, sew the legs to the body’s R5-R6, over the belly so that they are pointed forward. (Optionally, you can position the legs underneath the hamster’s body for a standing position.)

EARS (x2)

  1. Attach brown yarn to a st under R3, to the side of the head.
  2. In the same st: ch + hdc 2 + ch + sl st.
  3. FO with a tail and weave it in.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the second ear.

TAIL

  1. Insert hook under a st between R6-R7, at the center of the back. Pull brown yarn through.
